DESIGNING AND STEWARDING SPACES FOR COMMUNITY.

“Gathering matters more than ever; gathering in spaces that delight the senses and feel good to be in is essential for social well being.”

~ Saba Rahimian, Principal

Third Space Consulting aligns vision, design, and operations to create environments and experiences that feel good and leave people wanting more — rooting your business in its community. When a space is coherent and well thought out, people stay longer, return often, and spend more. Choosing it as their true third space.

What Is a Third Space?

“Third Space” is derived from the sociological term “Third Place,” coined by Ray Oldenburg to describe a frequently visited environment or community hub outside of the home or workplace.

More recently, the term “Third Space” has gained popularity in the media to describe emerging coffee shops, multi-purpose creative spaces, social wellness businesses, breweries, co-working hubs, gyms, cafés, dance halls, and more. What these spaces share is a culture that invites individuals to settle in, connect, and participate in something communal and inspiring—through shared rituals, creativity, and everyday delights.

What makes a third space stand out:

• A considered physical environment
• Intentional design and branding
• A sense of safety and comfort
• Distinct beauty and aesthetic identity
• Thoughtful, consistent hospitality
• An experience that fosters belonging

Our Method

  • This includes:

    • Defining the vision and purpose
    • Establishing core values and cultural keystones
    • Aligning the brand and spacial design board to reflect what’s defined above
    • Refining the products and services offered

The goal is to ensure the business has a clear internal compass before scaling, expanding, promoting, or repositioning.

  • Designing how the space feels and functions in real life.

    This includes:

    • Spatial flow, user experience, and the creation of memorable moments throughout the environment
    • Energy, pacing, and hospitality rituals in practice
    • Alignment between the physical space and the brand’s intention
    • Advisory on design direction—materials, palette, and floor plan

This work ensures the space supports presence, ease, and repeat engagement—rather than friction or confusion. It’s also where we identify what is truly generative within the business, and what may feel draining, misaligned, or off-brand.

  • This includes:

    • Streamlining operations

    • Identifying excessive or draining systems/overhead.

    • Evaluating return on investment across services and experiences

    • Implementing the Third Space Formula for behavioral lift and financial stabilization

The aim is clarity first then optimization — not optimization for optimization’s sake. For existing businesses, we will audit your monthly sales, customer frequency and reviews, etc, to see where there’s room for growth and refinement.

  • Anchoring the business in its place rather than chasing trends.

    This includes:

    • Understanding the local ecosystem and community needs

    • Clarifying how the business contributes to its environment

    • Positioning the concept as social infrastructure, not just a venue

    • Marketing and partnership strategies

    • Long-term relevance over short-term novelty

This work helps businesses become necessary, not just attractive.

  • Supporting the human at the center of the business.

    This includes:

    • Decision-making support

    • Boundary setting and role clarity

    • Leadership orientation and style

    • Reconnecting to purpose, passion, intrinsic gifts, and sustainability

Founder support is woven throughout all engagements rather than treated as a separate service.

The Gist

Through our work together, we clarify and design the full experience of your business—how it looks, how it feels, how it operates, and how it’s remembered.

We create a blueprint that strengthens customer loyalty, supports financial stability, and builds a culture that people want to return to—both as guests and as part of the team.

This includes shaping both brand and space in tandem: from visual identity and messaging to layout, flow, and the subtle details that influence how people move, gather, and connect within your environment.

The work is advisory at its core, with an immersive offering of on-the-ground support during key moments of implementation. We don’t run businesses on behalf of our clients—we help you see clearly, make aligned decisions, and bring your concept into coherence across operations, design, and experience.

We help turn your idea into a fully realized space.
